This workshop is tailored to volunteers who teach English to adult Ezidi community members, and others who may find the content relevant. It will be useful for volunteers who do not have EALD* training and are working one-to-one with a learner. The workshop will explore the key aspects of teaching English at low levels to speakers of other languages where there is no shared language with the teacher, and where the learner may or may not have literacy in their other language(s). There will be a balance of presentation, demonstration, Q and A and group work with teaching materials. Topics covered will include the following, in a fun and friendly learning atmosphere:
- Basic principles of adult EALD learning
- Learner needs
- Demonstration lesson
- Challenges of teaching English through English
- Deciding what to teach: relevance and frequency
- Getting meaning across: context, context, context
- Designing / adapting communicative tasks
- Useful materials
The workshop presenter is Dr Liz Ellis, Adjunct Associate Professor of Linguistics at UNE. Liz began teaching English to speakers of other languages in 1981. She has taught English, and trained English language teachers, in Australia, Brazil, France, Indonesia, Laos, Portugal, Spain, the UK and Uruguay. She is an accredited trainer in the international CELTA** administered by Cambridge English. She has taught Spanish, interpreting, applied linguistics and teacher education in universities since 1995. She is a speaker of Spanish and French and has studied several other languages.
