Applying for Australian Citizenship

Many people in the Ezidi community are now concerned about getting Australian citizenship. Be aware that there’s a rumour going around that the more children a family has, the easier it is to get citizenship. If you hear about this, please explain to people that it is NOT true.

Basically, Ezidis, like other permanent residents, can apply for citizenship after living here for 4 years. Here is some other relevant information (from https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/citizenship/become-a-citizen/permanent-resident ):

  • Children 15 years and younger can be covered in the parents’ application.
  • A basic knowledge of the English language is required to become an Australian citizen. To meet the language requirement, applicants must score 75% or more on the citizenship test, and answer 5 questions on Australian values correctly.
  • Some applicants (e.g. those 60 or over) do not have to sit the test but must have an interview to show they understand what it means to become an Australian citizen and have an adequate knowledge of the responsibilities and privileges of Australian citizenship
