Project Description
Assistance with English
Armidale Sanctuary members participate in the Home Reading Program by going to families’ homes and listening to the children read to assist them in their progress at school. This is an important activity as the parents cannot help the children with reading as they are also learning English.
The Homework Centre at Drummond Memorial Public School for refugee and migrant children for whom English is an additional language is another long standing initiative that Armidale Sanctuary Members have participated in for many years. Members attend once a week to help the children with their homework.
Members have also undertaken the Volunteer English Tutor course to provide additional assistance to adults undertaking English classes at TAFE. Some members have acted as teachers’ assistants at the government provided TAFE English classes.
